What is changing?

In addition to replacing your Google Meet background with a static image , now you can replace your background with a video. At the moment, you can select from three videos created by Google: a classroom, a party and a forest; More options will be available soon.

Why would you use it?

Custom backgrounds can help you show off more of your personality, as well as help hide your surroundings to maintain privacy. With the option to replace your background with video, we hope this will make your video calls more fun.

Additional details

Initially available only on the web, soon available for mobile devices

Initially, background video will only be available when using Google Meet on the web. We will make it available for mobile devices in the coming months; We will post an update to the Updates Blog of the workspace when available.

Requires Chrome M87 +

Starting June 30, 2021, the background replacement feature for backgrounds video and image will require Chrome version M87+ (released November 2020). Update your Chrome to make sure you can continue using the feature.

First Steps

Administrators: Visit the Help Center to learn more about how to control whether users can change their backgrounds on Meet. Note: The “Allow users to select custom images” option is disabled by default for Google Workspace for Education clients.

Implementation pace

Quick Release Domains: Gradual release on eligible devices (up to 7 days for feature visibility) starting on June 7, 2021.

Scheduled release domains: Gradual release on eligible devices (up to 7 days for feature visibility) starting on June 18, 2021.

Available to all Workspace users. Also available if you use Google Meet with a personal Google account.
