Add files to Drive

Create a new file from Drive

To create a Google file or folder in Drive, click “New” and select the desired option.

Upload files or folders to Drive

If you’re using the latest version of Chrome Browser or Firefox, you can drag files or folders from your computer to a Drive folder. Alternatively, click on:

  • uncheckedNew
  • uncheckedFile upload or Folder upload
  • uncheckedChoose the file or folder you want to upload.

Optional: You can upload files or folders using the Drive desktop app.

Upload a file with the same name

When you upload a file with the same name to Google Drive, it is saved as a revision of the existing version.

To save both files:
  • uncheckedOn your computer, go to drive.google.com.
  • uncheckedUpload a file.
  • uncheckedClick Keep both files.

Open files from Drive

Your files will automatically sync, allowing you to access them from any device.

  • uncheckedTo open a file, double-click on it.

Move files to Drive folders

  • uncheckedSelect the file.
  • uncheckedClick More and then Move to.
  • uncheckedChoose the destination folder and press “Move” or “Move here”.

Delete files in Drive

To delete a file from your Drive, move it to the trash. Files remain there for 30 days before they are automatically deleted. Consider the following when moving a file to the trash:

  • If you are the owner:
    • Collaborators will be able to make a copy of the file.
    • You can permanently delete a file.
  • If you are not the owner:
    • The action will only remove the file from your view in Drive.
Delete a file
  • uncheckedOn your computer, go to drive.google.com.
  • uncheckedClick on a file.
  • uncheckedClick Remove.
Restore a file
  • uncheckedOn your computer, go to drive.google.com.
  • uncheckedOn the left, click Trash.
  • uncheckedClick on the file you want to restore.
  • uncheckedAt the top, click Restore.
  • uncheckedTip: You can sort your trash files by deletion date to find the oldest or most recent deleted files.
  • uncheckedYou can find the restored files in their original location. If the original location no longer exists, look in “My Drive”.

Search for files in Drive

  • uncheckedOn your computer, go to https://drive.google.com.
    • To refine your search, you can use the following filters:
      • Type: Search for files by their format.
      • People: Filter by collaborators or with whom the file was shared.
      • Modified: Find files based on their last edited date.
  • Location: Search within a particular folder.
  • uncheckedIn the search box, type a word or phrase. Suggestions will appear as you type.
